Born and raised near Ilkley Moor, Alan's love of gardening began at the early age of ten. He began his career as a apprentice gardener at 15 and went on to horticultural journalism. He has since become a household name and one of Britain’s most trusted gardeners.

Alan has been named "Gardening Writer of the Year" twice and voted "Television Personality of the Year" in four successive years. Not only did Alan present "Gardeners World" and "Ground Force" for many years, he has also penned some 40 gardening books and can be seen regularly on television.
