What is a water feature?

Almost anything decorative that involves water - usually moving water.

Almost all features involve the recycling of water: there's a reservoir of water at the bottom,
the water is lifted to the top of the feature by a pump. The water then falls back
downwards in an attractive fashion, to be collected in the reservoir and recycled.
(In other words, you don't plug the feature into the mains water tap.)

The Reservoir:
A container at the bottom of the feature that stores water, houses the pump and catches the water as it falls back down again from the top of the feature.
The reservoir must be large enough to contain sufficient water, and have a 'catching' area large enough to prevent water splashing out of the feature. May need topping up occasionally as water is lost due to evaporation. The effect of wind needs to be taken into account when choosing a reservoir size for outdoor use.
Reservoirs are also known as 'pebble pools' or 'the bucket thingy at the bottom'.

Garden Pond as a reservoir: Use your garden pond as a ready-made reservoir. The pump goes in the pond. You can then create a 'fountain spray' in which the pump pushes the water straight up into the air as in Trafalgar Square, to fall back into the pond. Alternatively, use a statue like Aphrodite on the right.

'Self-contained' reservoirs When a water feature is described as 'self-contained', the reservoir is incorporated in the design. The reservoir for a 'wall fountain' will be the bowl - see picture above. Almost all indoor water features will be self-contained.

Underground (hidden reservoirs): Dig a hole in the ground and use a plastic reservoir, also known as a 'pebble pool'. The reservoir will have a 'lid' with 3 functions: 1) support the feature 2) support the attractive pebbles, gravel or slate chippings to hide the lid 3) have holes to allow the water to pass back into the reservoir. Not usually appropriate for indoor water features unless you can dig a hole in your floor.

Above ground separate reservoirs: An attractive bowl that can be purchased separately - often made from stainless steel. Place on the ground, indoors or out
