Buxus sempervirens, or “Box Hedging” as it is sometimes referred to is a classic evergreen hedging, perfect for low, formal hedges, borders and topiary. This dense hedge with its small, round leaves has been a key feature in British gardens for many years and its popularity is aided by its ability to grow in almost all soils. Buxus can easily be kept tidy and tightly clipped, making it ideal for ornamental gardening without the hassle of constant maintenance.

Buxus is extremely hardy and with withstand most the UK weather can throw at it. You can plant in any soil type and in any position in the garden. It’s dense foliage provides ample protection from wind and although evergreen, buxus provides year long interest through changing seasons with small flowers in the spring and small berries in autumn. Box hedging is often used in borders or as a standalone hedge and is the classic choice for topiary of any shape or size.

    Application information
    Follow these simple steps to planting success with Rootgrow™

    • 1. Dig planting hole as normal.
    • 2. Look at the base of the plant that is being planted and sprinkle into the bottom ofthe hole enough granules to cover only that area. Do not mix in.
    • 3. Place the plant in the hole directly on top of the granules. It is important that the granules come into direct contact with the plant roots.
    • 4. Backfill as normal with compost/soil.
    • 5. If using additional fertiliser add as a top dress or in backfill.
    • 6. Add mulch or top dress as required.
    How many plants will Rootgrow™ treat?

    • 9 cm pot: 1 tsp or 5g (a 360g sachet will treat approximately 72 plants)
    • 2-3 litre pot: 1 scoop or 25g (a 360g sachet will treat approximately 18 plants)
    • 4-5 litre rose: 2 scoops or 50g (a 360g sachet will treat approximately 9 roses)
    • 15 litre tree: 3 scoops or 60g (a 360g sachet will treat approximately 5 trees)

    Application

    • Plants in ground: Apply 1-2 handfuls around the base of the plant, lightly work into the soil and water well. For larger established plants, apply 2 handfuls per m of the canopy of the tree.
    • Container plants: Apply 2-3 handfuls per plant twice a yearly. We recommend that once per year the top 5-10cm of soil are removed from the pot and replaced with fresh compost. Add 1-2 handfuls when replacing the compost to keep your plants in prime condition.

Planting

  • Planting Distance: 30-40cm

This adaptive Box hedge will grow in almost all moist, well-drained soil and thrives best in partial shade.

Rootballed Box Hedges can be planted from November to March, when the hedge idormant. Ensure that the area where you are going to plant the hedge is clear and weed-free.

Caring and Maintenance

After planting it is important to ensure that the hedge does not dry out and the soil should always be moist. While the hedge is young it can be cut back by one third which encourages bushy growth, and trimmed between May and August. When the hedge reaches maturity it can be trimmed twice a year, once in late May and again at the end of August.

The box hedge can be scorched by sun and strong winds so it is important to ensure it has reasonable shelter.

What is a Rootballed plant?

Rootball plants are dug from the ground with the soil intact around the roots which are then wrapped in hessian sacking and/or mesh to keep the soil in place during transportation. When planting the hedge, do not remove the hessian or mesh as they are crucial to help reduce root damage.

Rootballed plants are only supplied from late autumn to early spring when they are dormant, as this reduces the shock of having their root systems cut and ensures the plants will grow away reliably in the spring as the weather warms up. Hedges should be planted as soon as possible after delivery provided the ground is not waterlogged or frozen. Evergreen plants should also be given protection from cold winds. After planting, your hedge should be thoroughly watered even if rain is due and then kept well watered for the first year to help establish roots. Check your plants regularly as they can become loose after heavy winds or frost.
