An allotment favourite first introduced in Ireland, solanum tuberosum "Cara" potatoes are known for their distinctive pink eyes set on their smooth, yellow-brown skins. The soft, floury flesh of these oval-round potatoes make them ideal for baking or turning into chips. The plants grow fairly tall, and have excellent resistance to drought, blight, golden eelworm, slugs, and common scab.
Potatoes are easy to grow. Below we address some common queries:
Soil Preparation: ensure the soil is well-drained and dig in plenty of manure.
Planting Distance: plant seeds around 25cm (10in) apart, around 10cm (4in) deep into the soil. Rows should be around 75cm (2ft 6in) apart.
Pest Control: take precautions against cutworms, slugs, wireworms, and potato cyst eelworms.
Watering Requirements: water regularly, particularly during dry spells.
