Originating from Holland in 1962, the solanum tuberosum "Desiree" potato is the world's most popular red potato. Highly versatile in more ways than one, the Desiree bulks up early in the season so can be treated as an early maincrop potato, however when left in the ground longer it can produce very large potatoes! A good all-rounder in the kitchen, they can be baked, mashed, or roasted, and stay in one piece better than most when boiled. The Desiree plants have good overall disease resistance and are particularly good at withstanding droughts.
Potatoes are easy to grow. Below we address some common queries:
Soil Preparation: ensure the soil is well-drained and dig in plenty of manure.
Planting Distance: plant seeds around 25cm (10in) apart, around 10cm (4in) deep into the soil. Rows should be around 75cm (2ft 6in) apart.
Pest Control: take precautions against cutworms, slugs, wireworms, and potato cyst eelworms.
Watering Requirements: water regularly, particularly during dry spells.
