First introduced in 1973, the solanum tuberosum "Nicola" potato is a popular salad potato that's a great choice for new gardeners. The long ovular tubers have thin skin, a waxy texture, and creamy yellow flesh. They are excellent boiled, or served hot or cold in salads. The plant is of medium height and perfect for growing in bags or containers on your patio. It is a second early variety and a great choice if you want to grow your own potatoes for Christmas.
Potatoes are easy to grow. Below we address some common queries:
Soil Preparation: ensure the soil is well-drained and dig in plenty of manure.
Planting Distance: plant seeds around 25cm (10in) apart, around 10cm (4in) deep into the soil. Rows should be around 75cm (2ft 6in) apart.
Pest Control: take precautions against cutworms, slugs, wireworms, and potato cyst eelworms.
Watering Requirements: water regularly, particularly during dry spells.
