Originating from Ireland, the solanum tuberosum "Rooster" potato is hugely popular due to its distinct look and versatility. This late maincrop variety is easily recognised by its characteristic red skin. The ovular tubers have shallow eyes and pale yellow dry floury flesh. These potatoes are great all-rounders in the kitchen, lending themselves well to boiling, baking, roasting, and making chips.
Potatoes are easy to grow. Below we address some common queries:
Soil Preparation: ensure the soil is well-drained and dig in plenty of manure.
Planting Distance: plant seeds around 25cm (10in) apart, around 10cm (4in) deep into the soil. Rows should be around 75cm (2ft 6in) apart.
Pest Control: take precautions against cutworms, slugs, wireworms, and potato cyst eelworms.
Watering Requirements: water regularly, particularly during dry spells.
