Key is to regularly water newly-planted plants, at least bimonthly for two months. It is also important to ensure you choose a location where your plant has enough space, which you can calculate from a variety's eventual height and spread.

Dig a hole twice the radius of the rootball. Before planting, drench the rootball. Place the pot in the hole, ensuring it sits no lower than an inch below ground.

Fill the hole with a mix of compost and garden soil, and add fertiliser and mycorrhizal fungi. Do not compress the soil. Give your plant a good watering. Add mulch on top whether bark and wood chippings, compost, manure, leaf-mould and stones. Make sure mulch doesn't touch the stem.

Apply fertiliser and replace decomposed mulch come spring.

Your helleborus will be sent directly from the grower to your doorstep. This approach means that you get a nursery fresh plant which was on the growing table one day and at your door the next. Our expert shrub nursery has spent decades perfecting the art of watering feeding and pruning shrubs and will do so until hours before it is packed. We see this as a real advantage over garden centres, where plants can be left unattended for weeks on end, or even other mail order companies that despatch from fulfillment sites.

This plant will be expertly packaged into a specially designed, extra thick cardboard box, which holds the plant in place, and sent through a delicate courier network to prevent any chance of damage in transit.

Helleborus are easy to grow. Below we address some common queries:

  • Position: helleborus prefer dappled shade that protects them from summer's midday sun and will thrive under any deciduous tree.
  • Soil Types: helleborus are suited to neutral and even slightly alkali (or chalky) soil, and may not thrive in acidic soils. If your helleborus is not doing well, try transferring to a container and potting with mushroom compost. It is important to avoid waterlogged soils, which starve plants' roots of oxygen, leading to plant death.
  • Hardiness: this species is fully hardy and is well suited to the UK's climate.

The Helleborus Gold Collection series was created by Heugar - a world leading plant breeder, based in Germany - who really do know everything about helleborus. With the motto 'No Compromise On Quality', Heugar's plants are years in the making, the product of hundreds of cross-breeding experiments and rigorous tests under real world conditions, ensuring the most beautiful long lasting blooms and suitability to wide ranging soil conditions.
