Originating from Ireland, the solanum tuberosum Cara potato are recognisable by their distinctive pink eyes. These oval-round potatoes have smooth, yellow-brown skins and soft, floury flesh. They have a variety of culinary uses, but are particularly good for baking or making into chips. These plants grow fairly tall and have good all-round disease resistance, including golden eelworm and blight.
Potatoes are easy to grow. Below we address some common queries:
Soil Preparation: ensure the soil is well-drained and dig in plenty of manure.
Planting Distance: plant seeds around 25cm (10in) apart, around 10cm (4in) deep into the soil. Rows should be around 75cm (2ft 6in) apart.
Pest Control: take precautions against cutworms, slugs, wireworms, and potato cyst eelworms.
Watering Requirements: water regularly, particularly during dry spells.
