2kg "International Kidney" Seed Potatoes

Introduced in 1879, the solanum tuberosum International Kidney potatoes are also known as Jersey Royals when grown in Jersey- however Jersey claim to have very specific soil conditions that make their potatoes special, so they are given an alternative name elsewhere.

The potatoes have a kidney shape with creamy flesh and skin with shallow eyes. They are a second early variety potato, however if left in the ground for longer they will bulk up to be harvested as a maincrop. The International Kidney has a great distinctive, almost buttery taste, and can be boiled or used in salads.

Advice on hot and droopy plants

If your plants are looking a little wilted right now, don’t worry! Plants like to be filled with water to keep their structure, and when it’s hot that water evaporates.

Just give them an off-schedule watering and they’ll be right as rain in no time! Be careful not to flood them - plants don’t like extremes.

Potatoes are easy to grow. Below we address some common queries:

  • Hardiness: protect the potatoes from frost.
  • Planting In Pots: suitable for growing in planters or bags, but make sure excess water can drain.
  • Position: plant in the sun with partial shade for best results.
  • Soil Types: plant in fertile, well-drained soil.

Soil Preparation: ensure the soil is well-drained and dig in plenty of manure.

Planting Distance: plant seeds around 25cm (10in) apart, around 10cm (4in) deep into the soil. Rows should be around 75cm (2ft 6in) apart.

Pest Control: take precautions against cutworms, slugs, wireworms, and potato cyst eelworms.

Watering Requirements: water regularly, particularly during dry spells.
