You’ll often see orchids filling the pages of home decor and style magazines and it's easy to see why; they’re one of the most beautiful and stylish houseplants you can purchase. Your orchid offers up a cascade of pink flowers that will last for months at a time - far longer than a store-bought bouquet. Orchids make wonderful gifts and they’re the perfect centrepiece to brighten up a console table or sideboard.
Orchids can be a little bewildering as they’re slightly different from usual houseplants but its best not to fret or worry. Get the lighting correct and go easy on the watering and you’ll be rewarded with months of blooms that can bring an elegant style to any space.
Orchids will best survive in bright but indirect light and require just a little watering. An espresso cup of water every 2 weeks or so is usually enough. This works out around 20-30ml every 10-14 days or so. As a rule of thumb, it’s better to soak them when too dry than too constantly drip-feed with little amounts. Orchids also love humidity so a bathroom can be an ideal location; otherwise, you can replicate humidity by standing the pot in a tray of pebbles and water.
Orchids can keep their flowers for months at a time but it is normal for the leaves to eventually drop and regrow. Once all the flowers have fallen off, the plant can be cut to 10-12cm above the pot and with a bit of patience and love, this plant with come back time and time again.
The moss can be kept looking fresh with a spraying of water or can be run under the tap, but allow the water to drain away to ensure the plant never sits in water.
