Doubling up as an ornamental and fruiting species, amelanchier hedging produces both a fantastic spectrum of colour and tasty berries. With an abundance of white blossom come spring and gorgeous orangey reds and salmon pinks in autumn, amelanchier is not to be sneezed at. Also known as juneberry or snowy mespilus, amelanchier is native to Canada where its berries have long been cooked by the indigenous people, going by the name saskatoons. Much like blackcurrants in appearance, but like blueberries in taste, the berries produce fantastic pies, jams and jellies.
