Anemopsis californicum is a stoloniferous perennial with a mat of large, oblong, basal leaves. The leaves are waxy and grey-green, and the conical flowers range from white to pale yellow to green, with white bracts surrounding the base of each cone. The plant flowers in spring and summer, and in autumn the entire plant turns bright red.

  • Flower Colour: white, pale yellow, green
  • Foliage Colour: grey-green
  • Approx. Growth Height: up to 45cm
  • Flowering Time: spring, summer

  • Growing Habit: mat forming, spreading
  • Exposure: exposed or sheltered
  • Hardiness: hardy
  • Rate of Growth: will reach maximum height in 5-10 years

Requirements:

  • Soil Requirements: clay, loamy, sand, chalky, neutral, alkaline
  • Moisture: boggy/damp, moisture retentive, pond margins

Caring and Maintenance:

This plant should be cut back in June and July to check growth and prevent it from becoming invasive. Propagate by division, runners, or seeds. Seeds should be sown as soon as ripe on moist compost.

Planting:

  • Plant spread: up to 50cm

This plant will thrive in moisture retentive soil and boggy conditions, in either full sun or partial shade. It prefers alkaline soil. Can also be planted in water and will tolerate short periods of drought.

A perennial is a plant that lives for more than two years. Perennials are flowering plants which grow and bloom over the spring and summer and then die back every autumn and winter. They typically grow structures that allow them to adapt to living from one year to the next through a form of vegetative reproduction rather than seeding. Perennial plants often have deep, extensive root systems which can hold soil to prevent erosion, capture dissolved nitrogen before it can contaminate ground and surface water, and outcompete weeds. They grow very well in conditions that are poor in resources due to their earlier emergence in the spring, and the development of larger root systems which can access water and soil nutrients deeper in the soil.
