Barley Straw Flakes

Barley straw is considered to be the most effective product available on today's market for garden pond clarification.
It is totally safe for:

  • Fish
  • Pondlife
  • Aquatic plants, and even children
  • Contains only natural active ingredients
  • Treats up to 1000 gallons / 4500 litres
  • High surface area for more efficient breakdown
  • Works on duck weed
Being such an environmentally sound product, unlike the alternative array of chemicals on the market it is also totally child safe.
Repeated experiments have proven this simple solution to be effective in control of algae, blanket weed, and green water problems.
Very simple to apply and maintain - quite literally you remove the plastic outer packaging, and put it in your pond. The best time to start using this is the beginning of spring, however, there is absolutely no reason not to start as soon as possible.

As the temperatures begin to rise after the cold of winter, the conditions become right for algae and weed growth to begin. This is the time the natural decomposition of the straw micro-organisms give rise to algal inhibitors (hydrogen peroxide) which help to dramatically reduce the levels of Nitrate and Phosphate in the water

"Barley straw... now recognised as the only effective product that can safely be used in ponds" Chris Beardshaw, 3 little gems, Daily Mail 14/05/05

As with all things, it is best to give your pond the best possible chance, therefore at time of installation, we would recommend manually removing any surface weed, and where possible cleaning the bottom of the pond. This should leave you with an excellently crisp clear pond for a whole season.

Unlike the old barley straw bag the new flakes are designed to quickly absorb water and sink leaving little or no surface debris.

For this we recommend using our Hand Operated Pond Silt Remover - CLICK HERE and Pond Vac - CLICK HERE.

"I've tried these lots of times. but the time before I lost everything in my pond. and I cried. But as it is winter I went back to them as they clear the water so quickly. there is just one problem they are supposed to sink which they did. but this time they came up. and they did not do there job. so I had to open the bags and drop the badly flakes drop to the bottom of my pond they are hopefully working better than they were. it's just I now have frothy water and it's also muddy. I'm concerned about my fish."

"We have been plagued by blanket weed and duckweed all summer. Have tried several products, some expensive, some sort of worked. The net bag works very well and tethered on string for easy removal. In just a few days after the pond clean which is recommended, I saw the duck weed start to return. Within literally hours of putting in the barley flakes the weed disappeared and has not returned. This was two weeks ago. I would also recommend, clean the pond out before starting the barley flakes. I also poured a solution with the barley flakes around the pond and dunked new plants in a bucket with the barley flakes before putting them in."

"The organic Barley flakes have exceeded expectation...they attract LEECHES!!! I have tried everything over the years with very limited success. I attached the bag to a length of wire, dropped the bag into the pond, attaching the wire to the side of the pond. After a week in the wild life pond, at the side in the sun, the bag was alive with Leeches, absolutely revolting. I lifted the bag out of the pond and submerged it into a jug of salt water. Left it over night, all of the Leeches were dead, safe to throw out with the general rubbish. Nothing short of a miracle!"

"I had always had a green pond, earlier this year I tried straw barley in tubes, I bought five, but sadly they had no affect on my pond and they floated for weeks, making my pond literally unsightly. This time I decided to return to the flakes, I bought five containers holding two pouches. I put them in, and within a space of two days my green pond had been transformed to a sight to behold, my wildlife, were & still are thriving, & birds come to bathe, & drink. Its as though an angel, waved her wind, thank you primrose for the flakes, I wouldn't have known what to do without you. Or the flakes, they saved my pond & wildlife."
