Bird seed mixes are a popular and convenient way to feed garden birds, chosen by many UK households. Different bird seed mixes are available for hanging feeders, bird tables and ground feeders. Many bird seed mixes come with added mealworms and suet pellets, which provide an extra treat for your garden birds.
A variety of bird seed mixes are available for ground feeders, bird tables and hanging feeders. They are an important food supply for many birds such as blue tits, doves and greenfinches, depending on which mix you choose. It is important to note that it is best to buy high quality bird seed mix, that do not contain fillers such as lentils and rice. Only a small group of species can eat these dry, so investing in quality will attract a wider range of birds to your garden.
What's In Bird Seed Mixes?
What is in bird mixes depends on which one you get. There are a great variety of bird seed mixes available, from no grow, to no mess, to mixes suited to certain birds. Here at Primrose we have made sure we have sourced the best quality bird seed mixes possible, that contain a high amount of nutrients and minimal 'fillers' such as lentils (not all birds can eat these bird seed mix fillers). Ingredients can vary but may include sunflower seeds, nuts, oats, suet pellets, mealworms, oatmeal, maize, nyjer seeds and wheat.
All Seasons Bird Seed Mixes
All seasons bird seed mixes are suitable to feed birds all year round. These bird seed mixes will attract a variety of species of wild birds.
No Mess Bird Seed Mixes
Many bird seed mixes contain materials that birds cannot therefore discard on the ground - for example, sunflower seed shells and peanut seed coat (the darker skin around the peanut). No mess bird seed mixes contain food that birds can eat whole, therefore there will be no mess underneath your feeder.
No Grow/Husk Free Bird Seed Mixes
Some bird seed mixes contain seeds that germinate such as nyjer seed, wheat, barley and sunflower seeds. No grow bird seed mixes are great if you don't want to deal with cleaning up germinated seeds from the bottom of your bird feeder.
Mealworm & Insect Blends
Insect blends contain the extra nutrient of mealworms, which are favourites with robins and the like. Mealworms are high in protein and fats and are a great addition to the diet of wild birds, especially during winter and breeding season.
