The textbook definition of a veranda is “a roofed, open-air gallery or porch typically attached to a larger residential building”.

However, as the term is used differently across the UK, what actually is a veranda to Brits? Is it a pergola? A gazebo? All of these diversities of designs and roofs can fall under ‘verandas’, while a veranda is actually a shade style all its own.

What is the difference between a Pergola and Veranda?

Generally, pergolas are free-standing structures that can be placed anywhere in the garden. Verandas are normally attached to residential buildings and are typically used as an outdoor patio area. Put a pergola against your house wall and it’s a wooden veranda.

What are the different types of verandas?

Flat roofed Verandas

These are the most common type of verandas you’ll see, they are used commonly across the UK as carports, extended patios or alfresco dining areas. These are the all-rounders, which are adaptable for most gardens and patios varying in a range of sizes.

A Pergola

Styles and materials can vary quite significantly however pergolas, as previously mentioned, can be completely detached from the building and be free-standing with no need to fix onto a building. Pergolas can be used for creating focal points or used as an arbour or climbing plant support.

Sunroof Verandas

Also called ‘louvre roofs’, or simply an opening roof – these verandas have a sunroof which can be open and closed for your preference on hotter days to allow heat to escape, creating needed shade or for stargazing at night under the comfort of the shelter.

Curved Roof Veranda

As well as making the space feel larger, choosing a veranda with a curved room will also create a focal point on the structure as it can add a contemporary and interesting look.

How much does a veranda cost?

Depending on what style, material and size you choose, verandas can typically start at around £700 for a more basic style and set up while the more classic styled metal verandas can start at £1500 upwards. Luxury and sun-roofed verandas typically start at around £3000+ for a more sophisticated and durable product.
