Planting:

Carex Elata 'Acuta' will grow well in full sun or partial shade in well drained to damp soil. Prepare the flower bed by using a garden fork or tiller to loosen the soil. Prepare a hole for the plant, place the plant in the hole and carefully yet firmly fill in with loose soil.

Caring and Maintenance:

Divide and replant in spring and plant container grown plants in a sunny position in moist or boggy soil. Plant in fertile, moisture-retentive soil as weather warms up. Cut back in early autumn, after flowering. Propagate by division.

A perennial is a plant that lives for more than two years. Perennials are flowering plants which grow and bloom over the spring and summer and then die back every autumn and winter. They typically grow structures that allow them to adapt to living from one year to the next through a form of vegetative reproduction rather than seeding. Perennial plants often have deep, extensive root systems which can hold soil to prevent erosion, capture dissolved nitrogen before it can contaminate ground and surface water, and outcompete weeds. They grow very well in conditions that are poor in resources due to their earlier emergence in the spring, and the development of larger root systems which can access water and soil nutrients deeper in the soil.

The Award of Garden Merit or AGM is an award made to garden plants by the British Royal Horticultural Society after a period of assessment by the appropriate committees of the society. Awards are made annually after plant trials (which may last for one or more years, depending on the type of plant being trialled) at RHS Garden, Wisley and other RHS gardens, or after observation of plants in specialist collections. This is intended to judge the plants' performance for conditions in the UK.
