Clematis are easy to plant and certainly don't need much encouragement to grow!

If planting next to a wall or fence, dig a hole twice as wide as the plant’s pot and half as deep again 2ft away. You can then train the plant to grow up the structure, you can give it a helping hand by adding some wire or tying in a few stems. They perform best when their roots are shade, that can should be considered when positioning the plant and can be achieved by planting around the rootball.

In terms of care, watering is important especially during the summer months. They will need a thorough watering twice weekly during dry spells. Best blooms are encourage by adding a potassium rich fertiliser early in spring.

Pruning worries some people but it needn't. As long as you know which type of Clematis you have, it is really quite simple. It is best explained in our full planting and care guide, which you can read by clicking below.

Your Clematis will be sent directly from the grower, in the heart of England, to your doorstep.

This approach means that you get a Nursery Fresh Plant which was on the growing table one day and at your door the next.

Our expert climber nursery has spent decades perfecting the art of watering feeding and pruning climbers and will do so until hours before it is packed.

We see this as a real advantage over garden centres, were plants can be left unattended for weeks on end, or even other mail order companies that despatch from fulfillment sites.

This plant is grown on a 90cm cane and expertly packaged into a specially designed, extra thick cardboard box which hold the plant in place and sent through a delicate courier network to prevent any chance of damage in transit.

  • Position: Check whether suitable for shade in the variety information table above. Most Clematis will be fine in full sun or partial shade, some prefer heavier shade. Clematis have quite delicate roots that benefit some protection from strong, full sun. You can achieve this by planting against a shading object or between plants that will offer some shade on the soil.
  • Soil Types: Clematis will grow well in most soil type. They prefer well-draining soil and not heavy clay, their roots will rot if sat in water for prolonged periods.
  • Hardiness: There can be some minor damage in years with a hard, late frost but it rarely significant and the plants tend to recover well.
