Once the most popular dessert apple in the UK, the Cox has been overtaken by imported cultivars such as Gala, Pink Lady and Jazz. The tree makes up the preponderance of dessert apple trees grown in the UK, making it the standard bearer for UK cultivars. Aromatic, crisp, and juicy the apple is known for its excellent flavour and attractive appearance. A more recent offspring, the Queen Cox possesses larger fruits, whilst maintaining the nuances that define its parent's excellent taste. Christmas Pippin's parentage is unknown but it is believed to be the Cox. Found by chance growing at the side of the M4, the apple is superior in many respects, being both easy to grow and suitable for storage till Christmas.
