How to fix your garden arch to the ground

It's important that your garden arch is secure so that all your effort of growing beautiful climbing plants isn't destroyed on a windy day. You can secure your arches with brackets or by screwing poles and fixings to each leg and sinking it into soft ground.

You may choose to anchor your metal garden arch in concrete by digging holes in the ground and laying the bottom with drainage material, securing the arches in the holes, and pouring concrete to set it. Alternatively, you can screw your arch into concrete foundations set in your garden floor. 

Ensure the foundations are frost proof and that they can drain properly in wet weather. If water gets in underneath and freezes, it can lift or break the concrete foundations. Dig holes around 80 to 100 cm deep with drainage material, such as gravel, underneath.

How do I choose a garden arch?

When choosing the perfect garden arch for your area, you need to plan ahead and consider what sort of plants and how many you expect to grow on the installation. When the plants grow, they should be supported with a stable structure. Make sure it is big enough for what you have in mind.

If you're wondering whether to purchase a metal or wooden garden arch, you should decide on the style you want your garden to have. Metal can feel more contemporary whereas wooden can appear more rustic. A low maintenance garden arch would be the metal option, as wooden may require treatment to make it last longer against mould and rot.

Where should I put my garden arch?

This can depend on what role you want your garden arch to play in the design of your outside area. Whether you're looking to:

  • Showcase climbing plants as a focal point
  • Create an entrance to a pathway
  • Create a tunnel
  • Frame a beautiful view

How do you install a wooden garden arch?

Don't let all your hard work go to waste and make sure your wooden archway is properly fixed to the ground so a gust of wind won’t destroy your plants and flowers. If you’re installing your wooden arch into soft ground, it should be supported and held sturdy by fence post concrete which can be poured into the hole the arch is placed in. Or, screw it into concrete foundations into your garden floor.

It's important to remember to make your wooden garden arches weatherproof and place drainage material like gravel at the bottom of the holes that you have dug. This will allow rainwater to drain away in wet weather and prevent it from rotting the wood or freezing in winter and damaging any concrete or foundations you’ve placed. To protect your wooden arches from wet weather, dig holes from between 80 to 100 cm deep and fill them with drainage material.

This can entirely depend on what you want to achieve with your wood arches – there is no ‘one size fits all’ approach, use yours to personalise your garden and showcase striking areas of it. For example, you could:

When cared for properly, you can expect your wooden garden arch to last up to 15 years. Look for fungal rot and any other problems that can arise from wooden structures with time.
