Log Store FAQs
Why are log stores open?
Wood stores are open because wood still needs to breathe even when it is stored outside. If it was closed off, there wouldn’t be as much ventilation and problems with humidity, mould, and various insects to thrive. While wooden log stores provide shelter from the rain with a roof, you can cover the open front with weatherproof firewood cover during really wet weather. Never use tarpaulin as this can block ventilation. How and where do you store garden logs?
When storing your logs away outdoors, there are a few things you should bear in mind to get the most out of your garden storage:
- Store the logs neatly and tightly so only the top later will get damp in the rain.
- If wind and rain come from a certain direction, face your wood store away.
- If you can have your log store facing direct sunlight, do so. But make sure it is protected against other elements.
- Don't place it under a tree or somewhere with overhead branches as rainwater can fall.
- Avoid placing it on the grass dry logs can soak up moisture from the grass.
Why are my logs going mouldy?
Mould is growing because wet wood is in a non-ventilated area. If your wood is wet, let it dry outside before you stack it in your log store. If you’re looking to store your wood indoors, take a look at our log baskets.
