Cotula Coronopifolia is the perfect plant for small ponds and can be used to create a delightful raft at the pond edge. It has shiny foliage with a strong scent and is topped with a mass of thick, bright yellow button shaped flowers, enabling it to enhance and contrast with the deep green colour of other plants. Cotula Coronopifolia is an annual plant which dies once the flowering season is over and regenerates in the spring from the large amount of seeds produced in the previous year.

Characteristics:

  • Foliage Colour: deep green with reddish bottom lobes
  • Flower Colour: bright yellow
  • Approx. Growth Height: 20-25cm
  • Max. Spread: 30cm
  • Planting Time: spring
  • Flowering Time: summer
  • Fragrance: strong scent like lemon verbena and camphor when crushed
  • Uses: zone 1 & 2 of a pond
  • Exposure: exposed or sheltered
  • Growing Habit: low rafting
  • Hardiness: tender
  • Rate of Growth: fast
  • Suitable for medium and large ponds

Requirements:

  • Light Requirements: full sun, partial sun
  • Moisture: damp ground, shallow water
  • Soil requirements: acid, neutral, alkaline, sandy, loamy, clay

Planting:

Plant in a medium sized pot with approximately 0-24cm of water above the planting basket. Plant spacing: 30cm. Aquatic and marginal plants should be placed in pond plant baskets filled with aquatic soil (sold separately) and topped with a thin layer of gravel to help prevent the soil from washing away. This plant is suitable for zones 1 & 2 of a pond.

Caring and Maintenance:

This is a very low maintenance plant which requires a well moisturised environment. It is an annual plant, which means that it will disappear after the flowering period and will regenerate from produced seeds in the spring time. The division of rooted pieces in the springtime is recommended.

Marginal and pondside plants add interest, colour and structure to ponds, and offer the benefit of delightful fragrance. They are ideal for places near to patio or decking areas, where their sweet aroma can be appreciated. The plants can be positioned around the perimeter of a pond or on levelled shelves for original and attractive exposure. Marginal plants should be planted in boggy ground or shallow water for optimal growth results.
