Every garden needs one and here at Primrose, we offer such a huge range and variety that you are sure to find one that is just right for you.
The Perfect Place to Grow
In the UK our growing season can be short, and variable at best. Having a sheltered space in the garden for capturing early spring heat and offering protection from winter frost can make all the difference in giving your plants the best chance of thriving. Greenhouses work by letting in the suns heat through glass or polycarbonate panels and trapping the warmth inside. So you can rely on consistent temperatures thoughout the season, propagating seeds, fruits, vegetables and other plants in the most effective way possible.
How to Choose
While researching the kind of greenhouse youd like to go for, its important to think about how you will be using it. Try marking out the size it would take up with string to get an idea of the space it would take up in your garden. Bear in mind youll need a walkway down the middle, which reduces the area for planting. Its often better to go for a wider greenhouse than a longer one for this reason.
We stock a number of aluminium and wooden frames. Aluminium frames are thin and generally cheaper than wood. They require little maintenance and come in a range of colours such as green, black and cream. Wood will provide a more traditional look to most gardens and generally keeps in more heat than aluminium. One of the benefits of a wooden frame is the flexibility to knock in nails or hooks as needed.
Finally there is the glazing to consider. You can choose traditional horticultural glass, which is attractive but breaks easily - so its worth considering the slightly more expensive toughened glass. Alternatively, you can have polycarbonate panels, which are much harder to break and retain heat much better.
The trick to choosing the perfect place for your new greenhouse is balancing the need for shelter and sun. Too much exposure to strong winds can cause damage, so try to use fences as wind shields. Make sure to always leave a bit of space around for maintenance and installation. Avoid overhanging branches, which could block too much of the sun or risk falling and breaking the roof panels.
All Shapes and Sizes
Depending on your garden, you may want a large freestanding greenhouse, or something a little smaller for growing your plants. We sell a range of sizes as well as lean-to models, that are space-saving and offer proximity to your home. If youre looking for propagating in a much smaller space, we also stock mini growhouses and cold frames. Our polytunnels offer a great alternative to the traditional greenhouse, and are perfectly suited to allotments or other areas where easy installation is necessary.
Once your greenhouse is installed, its time to kit it out with a range of accessories. There are a number of ventilation options on offer to prevent overheating, including automatic vent arms. For the colder days, you can bring some warmth with a hanging or freestanding heater. Use staging and shelving to get the most out of the space, and keep your planting easy to access and water. Or you can even install an irrigation system to make watering even easier.
