This planter has been made using a innovative material called corten steel. It will arrive looking the same as many other steel planters, but after just a few days of use, it will start to develop a protective, rust-like surface. This layer protects against further corrosion, and it is completely unique, so while every planter looks alike, no two planters are identical. Please Note: this process can take up to 4-5 months to develop completely.
Please note: Once the planter has developed its protective rust layer it has the potential to stain objects it comes in contact with, please be mindful where you place your planter.
Corten is a type of steel that naturally weathers over time, and developing an attractive and protective rust layer. Although somewhat paradoxical, the steel surface of the planter develops a coating of rust which is engineered to protect against further corrosion and keep the steel under-layer in good condition. In other words, the steel is allowed to rust in order to form the protective coating. This protective layer develops due to the elements that are active in the alloys of the steel. It regenerates continuously when subjected to the influence of water and oxygen.
Tall Planter
Create your own delightful display with your favourite plants in this lovely tall, corten steel planter. With its organic and earthy quality, it works especially well in the garden, highlighting brightly coloured plants and beautiful brickwork.
History of Corten Steel
The Barclays centre in Brooklyn has been causing a stir worldwide with its striking, organic, rusted look. It has been made using corten steel, a material which is being favoured by innovative and daring designers, architects and sculptors across the globe. Created originally in the 1930s by United States Steel for use on ore wagons, its use has now expanded, with designers seeing the potential it possesses. It has been used to create bridges, rail cars, transmissions towers, shipbuilding and, of course, garden products. This modern and contemporary material has really got people excited, creating discussion about how we design things and challenging the norm, which can only be a good thing.
Rusting Process
The image to the left shows how the planter will look when it first arrives and before the protective layer has started forming, looking much like any normal steel planter. If you wish, you can speed up the rusting process by using a cloth and rubbing the surface with salt and/or vinegar.
Handy Drainage Hole and Bung
To provide adequate drainage each Corten Steel Planter includes a drainage hole and bung in the bottom of the bass, helping you retain or release water from your planter. If left in the planter the bung will help retain as much water as possible, however we cannot completely guarantee that no water will escape while the bung is in use.
