- Light Requirements: full sun, partial shade
- Soil Requirements: acidic, neutral, alkaline; sand, clay, loam; poorly-drained
Houttuynia thrives in moist, poorly-drained soil, either in full sun or partial shade. It can be very invasive, especially in wet soils, spreading by underground stems. It is therefore ideal for containers where its spread can be restricted.
This plant is suitable for zones 1 & 2 of a pond.
Caring and Maintenance
These plants are low-maintenance, but spread vigorously. Divide regularly to limit spread, especially in spring. Keep soil moist, and in the winter protect from the cold with dry mulch. Propagate by seed, by division, or using semi-ripe cuttings of young basal shoots.
