Laburnum watereri Vossii (Golden Rain) Tree Bare Root

An unforgettable sight to behold if trained over a pergola, the Laburnam x Watereri 'Vossi' (or Golden Rain) is a broad-crowned deciduous tree that takes a shallow rooting habit. Its gorgeous long yellow racemens glimmer in the sunlight, perfectly contrasting its deep green oval ternate leaves. This beautiful, hardy tree has a spreading crown and is highly scented.

The Golden Rain tree is a perfect addition to any garden, if trained over a pergola or planted as a specimen tree. Although this tree is known to be toxic to humans, the effect is more than likely to be a tummy upset if consumed.

The bare root variation of the Golden Rain is a great alternative to container-grown versions during the winter. It has already been growing for two years in ideal conditions so that the tree will already be in great shape and ready to take off, regardless of the season.

Amazing Colour

One of the most attractive things about this tree is the amazing of display of colour that it puts on in the summer. Chains of bright, golden yellow flowers hang from the branches and can reach up to 60cm in length! The golden racemens contrast beautifully against the deep-green, oval shaped foliage and cover the tree. This tree is a showstopper and would look brilliant placed in a garden that is lacking in colour.

Size and Shape

This laburnam tree is a vigorous grower and will reach up to 6 metres in height fairly quickly. It has a broad, vase shaped crown and a strong spreading habit. It would look brilliant grown as a specimen tree in a smaller garden. As this tree has a strong spreading habit it can also be used to make a laburnam walk which is an arch of laburnams that have been trained up over a trellis structure.

Planting and Care

Suited to almost all, well-drained and moderately fertile soils with pH between 6.5 and 7.5 in an exposed or sheltered location in full sun. Before planting your tree, clean up all wandering weeds and keep a clean ring around the tree base. Autumn is the best season for planting trees, as the soil moisture and heat allow easier and faster root establishment and regeneration of damaged root systems. Keep a planting distance of at least 3.6 metres. Water young trees regularly until roots are well established. Trim annually from mid to late summer. Apply some fertiliser in spring in order to promote healthy growth and a good crop. Optionally, mulch in spring. Check tree ties regularly and loosen any if necessary to avoid rubbing of the stems.

Root Wrapped Tree

This is a typical example of our root wrapped trees that you will receive - note the fruit/ornamental trees we stock will vary in appearance according to species and season. Please be aware that the compost around the roots is there just to keep them moist and will fall away when unwrapped, leaving a bare-rooted plant. You can mix this compost with your soil when planting your tree. For more information about planting your bare root tree please click here to see our guides.

Newly Planted Tree

Here at Primrose we planted some young trees so that we could document how they grew over the next few years. This is an image of a newly planted tree that was planted in March and is roughly how your tree will look when it arrives.

3 Months Later

As you can see there has already been a lot of tree growth after only three months. We are going to continue to document the growth of the trees that were planted. This means that you can compare and see what your tree should look like at various stages of growth.
