Commonly referred to as the Star Magnolia, the Magnolia stellata tree boasts pure white obovate flowers (sometimes with a pale pink tinge) in the spring, blossoming from small silky buds during winter time. The deciduous Japanese tree emits a pleasantly soft fragrance and holds little space, making it an ideal plant for gardens with limited area to play with.

This easy care shrub requires little pruning and will reward you by creating a fantastic focal point in the garden offering year round interest.

Caring and Maintenance

Plant in moist, well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade. Select a position offering shelter from cold winds. Mix in a slow-release fertiliser when planting and water well. Prune in mid-summer if necessary

Planting

  • Planting Distance: 3-4m minimum

Before planting your tree, clean up all wandering weeds and keep a clean ring around the tree base. Water well during the first year until well established.

Autumn/ spring are the best season for planting, as the soil moisture and heat allow easier and faster root establishment and regeneration of damaged root systems.

RHS Award of Garden Merit

The Award of Garden Merit or AGM is an award made to garden plants by the British Royal Horticultural Society after a period of assessment by the appropriate committees of the Society.
