The magnolia of choice for small gardens, magnolia stellata is a small 3m high shrub with dainty white flowers emerging from pink buds.
Like other magnolias, its fragrant flowers emerge before the leaves, providing a nice burst of colour come spring.
With stellata meaning star in latin, it is also known as the star magnolia.
Recipient of the RHS Award of Garden Merit, the stellata is native to Japan and can be found growing naturally alongside mountain streams. It was introduced to the United Kingdom in the 1870s by prolific plant collector Charles Maries.
