Winner of the RHS Award of Garden Merit, magnolia 'Susan' is notable for flowering in April-June, when it will produce an abundance of deep pink-purple flowers. This unusual flowering date makes it perfect the colder parts of the UK, where it will escape the last frost.
A great addition to any small garden, magnolia susan forms a fantastic vase shape.
Although commonly viewed as a shrub, well treated it can reach 6m high.
Created in the 1950s at the U.S. National Arboretum, susan was produced in a hybridisation programme that gave birth to the Girl Magnolias. All crosses of Magnolia liliiflora 'Nigra' with Magnolia stellata 'Rosea', the other girls are Ann, Betty, Judy, Randy, Ricki, Jane and Pinkie.
