Meadow Sweet Filipendula Ulmaria - 1L Pot - Cut Back

Filipendula Ulmaria is a perennial herb that grows in damp meadows. It has large and graceful creamy white flowers in attractive, irregularly branched cymes. When young, its foliage is a fresh golden green but fades to old gold in summer. Filipendula Ulmaria is a food plant for hoverflies, bees and caterpillars, and its seeds provide food for birds. The whole plant is edible, gives off a sweet almond fragrance, and is often used as a strewing herb.

  • Light Requirements: full sun, partial sun
  • Moisture: moist but well drained or poorly drained
  • Soil requirements: neutral, acidic, alkaline, clay, loam, sand

Planting:

Plant in moisturised soil approximately 2.5cm over the crown. Plant spacing: 60-90cm apart. Aquatic and marginal plants should be placed in pond plant baskets filled with aquatic soil (sold separately) and topped with a thin layer of gravel to help prevent the soil from washing away. This plant is suitable for zones 1 & 2 of a pond.

Caring and Maintenance:

This is a low maintenance plant. It forms clumps of upright growth, but will self seed freely. You can control its self-seeding by removing the faded flowers before they start setting seeds. The division of rooted pieces, or growing from seeds, should take place between September and May; this is recommended to avoid overcrowding. If foliage depreciates in summer, cut back hard to promote new growth.

Marginal and pondside plants add interest, colour and structure to ponds, and offer the benefit of delightful fragrance. They are ideal for places near to patio or decking areas, where their sweet aroma can be appreciated. The plants can be positioned around the perimeter of a pond or on levelled shelves for original and attractive exposure. Marginal plants should be planted in boggy ground or shallow water for optimal growth results.
