Caring and Maintenance

Ferns are hardy, easy-to-grow perennials which require little maintenance. During the hot summer months, regular watering is recommended. Additional fertilization is not necessary if it has been spread with mulch. Young specimens should be divided and replanted in late winter or early spring to establish their roots. Cut back faded stems in early spring.

  • Plant spreading: up to 1m
Ferns are ideal plants for fully or partially shaded places in the garden. It is important to carefully prepare the soil, as most of them prefer moist, fertile and humus-rich soil. Mulched bark spread around the plants will prevent the soil from drying out whilst protecting the roots from excessive heat. This layer will change over time in fresh humus, meaning that using artificial fertilizers is not necessary. If the soil conditions provided are right, they can be grown in half to full sun too.

Ferns have impressed with their simplicity and elegance for a long time. They bring life to dark corners of the garden, where most other plants would fail. In open areas, ferns look best in rock gardens and under trees, perfectly complementing its undergrowth. They can also be planted at the edges of water channels, where delicate leaves will be reflected by flowing water, adding a touch of magic and charm to the area. The foliage of ferns stay evergreen or turn into attractive red or russet hues through the winter months. Ferns are good companion plants of hostas, lilies of the valley, grasses, primroses and anemones.

This plant is suitable for zones 1 & 2 of a pond.
