A unique, highly attractive, evergreen bamboo with thick stems and the potential to grow as high as 30 feet! The jet black culms and feathery green leaves make the Phyllostachys Nigra one of the most sought after bamboos.

This bamboo is hardy and easy to look after and once planted will provide you with a hassle free statement piece to add an oriental charm to your garden. It is less invasive than other phyllostachys with a more clumping nature, but you may need to keep an eye on it in warmer years. This plant is perfect for hedging or creating an uniquely luxurious privacy screening.

Oriental Charm

Phyllostachys Nigra is an excellent, evergreen, statement plant with the potential to reach 30 feet! It has wonderful, narrow, green leaves which contrast nicely against the canes which change from green to black with maturity. Originally native to the Hunan Province of China, it has a wonderful oriental charm and would look brilliant as part of a garden that incorporates other influences from East Asia. It can be matched with other plants from that part of the world including Japanese Flowering Cherry Trees and Acer Trees.

Size, Shape and Uses

Phyllostachys Nigra is an incredibly striking variety of bamboo and it is easy to see why it is so popular. It makes an excellent specimen plant with its tall, dramatic and upright shape. The slender, jet-black canes gently arch under the weight of the evergreen leaves and it makes an excellent architectural statement in the garden. Planting and Care

Place in either a sunny or shaded area in a sheltered spot away from cold, drying winds. This bamboo will thrive in any soil as long as it is moist but has good drainage. Water young plants regularly until established. Remove weak, dead, damaged or spindly stems in spring. Cut out any flowering shoots promptly to discourage more from forming.
