"We noticed one juvenile rat running around our garden and then attempting to get at bird food hanging on fences and trees etc. So we did need to have our rat deterrent outside which it does not recommend. We set up a wooden box as shelter for the device and aimed it at bird feeders. The rat now tries all sorts of detours to avoid the direction of sound waves coming from the box, so judging from the rat's behaviour, I guess in an indoor situation - garage or shed, it would work well as the rat clearly does not like it. I haven't seen it on bird feeders since installation, though it hasn't given up yet and probably lurks down the far end of the garden out of earshot. Perhaps I should get some more and dot them around the garden at various angles."
