'Jester' is a striking architectural plant. It has sword-shaped, strappy leaves that arch attractively at the tips and provide an intense splash of colour with their bright pink centres and lime green margins. In hot summers spikes of tubular red flowers appear adding yet more colour to this already interesting plant. It would look particularly good as part of a tropical themed garden and it is sure to make a statement. It can be grown in a container and would also look brilliant planted in a bed or mixed border. It is happiest placed in a sunny, sheltered position in moist but well-drained soil.
Caring and Maintenance
Phormiums are low maintenance plants and once established require very little care. Remove dead or damaged leaves in late spring. Apply a balanced fertiliser and mulch in spring to encourage new growth. Water regularly until established. Protect from extended periods of frost.
Phormiums are happy planted in most soils as long as it is moist but well-drained. Too much soil moisture can cause root or crown rot so be careful not to overwater. They should be planted in a sheltered spot in the full sun but will tolerate partial shade. They can be grown in containers as well as planted in the garden.
