Also known as 'common columbine', aquilegia vulgaris is a herbaceous perennial with a downward-facing bonnet-shaped flower. The flowers are most often blue or purple, but you'll find pink and white varieties too to keep it interesting. Plant an aquilegia bulb and look forward to a dainty burst of pastel colour in spring and summer. It's a nice and hardy plant too!
