Fig Trees FAQs

Fig trees, or Ficus carica, originated in northern Asia are usually associated with the warm sunny climate of the Mediterranean region.

Figs contain a host of vitamins and minerals and are renowned for their health benefits including aiding digestion, lowering cholesterol, and boosting weight loss. It is their sweet-tasting, succulent fruit along with their hardiness and ability to thrive in different conditions which have made them a sought after tree throughout the centuries.

Where is the best place to plant a fig tree?

We have put together a selection especially adapted to the UK climate. While they will thrive even in the cooler northern regions, they will need to be grown in warm sheltered spots and ideally against a sunny south-facing wall or under glass. This is to help the fruit ripen with the sun.

Figs grow well in any soil with good drainage and can be grown and trained against a wall, grown to their natural bushy form in the open, or even trained to stand freely. 

How do you look after a fig tree?

In the UK, these trees can be vigorous growers so you may want to restrict their roots by growing in a container to keep the tree smaller and more productive. The good news is that they're easy to grow and require minimal pruning or attention – cut them back whenever you feel they’re getting too big. Prune your tree in late winter to avoid the branches from bleeding sap as this can weaken or even kill it. Discover our gardening tools and equipment so you can keep yours looking great.

Because they're not used to particularly cold climates, you need to prepare your fig tree for winter. Protect them from the elements and keep them warm by wrapping them in layers of burlap in late autumn or early winter. Remove the burlap in early spring and add mulch around the base to help the soil retain moisture. 

How long does it take a fig tree bear fruit?

It can take fig trees a few years to initially produce a crop, but once they have matured they will blossom twice each year. Just make sure they are watered enough, however, don't give them too much water when the fruit is ripening as they might burst.
