Rowan Tree - 9L Pot (Sorbus aucuparia)

The traditional rowan, also known as 'Mountain Ash', is a fast growing and incredibly popular tree native to the UK. It's popularity is well merited as it produces an unrivalled autumn display of brilliant red berries which add colour to your garden late into winter where it is often needed.

It's leaves are also beautiful in their own right with a unique shape and vibrant green colour which provide a great contrast to the berries when their paths cross in early autumn.

It's hardiness and ability to thrive in almost any soil make it an easy, quick option for those after a ornamental focal piece sooner, rather than later. A bushy tree, the Rowan will be alive with birds and other wildlife all year round, so pack up the bird table, this tree is all you will need.

Primrose Guides

Planting and Care

Suited to almost all, well-drained and moderately fertile soils with pH between 6.5 and 7.5 in an exposed or sheltered location in full sun. Before planting your tree, clean up all wandering weeds and keep a clean ring around the tree base. Water well during the first year until well established. Autumn is the best season for planting trees, as the soil moisture and heat allow easier and faster root establishment and regeneration of damaged root systems. Keep a planting distance of 8m.

Water young trees regularly until roots are well established. Trim annually from mid to late summer. Apply some fertilizer in spring in order to promote healthy growth and a good crop. Optionally, mulch in spring. Check tree ties regularly and loosen any if necessary to avoid rubbing of the stems.

Rowan Tree Lore

Rowan Trees have a long history of magical properties. They are found throughout history in many different cultures' mythology from Ancient Greece to Britain. It is very prominent in Norse mythology where it is said that the first woman was made from the rowan tree. It also had a role in saving the life of the Norse God Thor, when it bent over a fast flowing river in the underworld where Thor was being swept away so he could grab on to it and get back to shore. In Britain it has a long history in folklore of providing protection against witchcraft and enchantment. One of the reasons for this could be due to the bright red berries that the tree produces in autumn. The colour red was seen as the best colour for protecting against enchantment so this could have easily added to its reputation. It also was said to protect any dwelling that it grew by and people would carry parts of the tree as protection from enchantment as well as being used to protect cows and dairy produce.

Newly Planted Tree

Here at Primrose we planted some young trees so that we could document how they grew over the next few years. This is an image of a newly planted tree that was planted in March and is roughly how your tree will look when it arrives.

3 Months Later

As you can see there has already been a lot of tree growth after only three months. We are going to continue to document the growth of the trees that were planted. This means that you can compare and see what your tree should look like at various stages of growth.

How to Plant a Potted Tree

A containerised tree can be planted at any point during the year unlike a bare root one. As long as the ground that it is planted in is not frozen or waterlogged the tree should be able to establish itself in any season. When planting your tree make sure that it has been watered and that it is in a suitable position where it can recieve plenty of sunshine and shelter from cold winds. For more information about planting your containerised tree please click here to see our guides.
