15 "Golden Gourmet" Shallot Sets

Originating from the Netherlands, the allium cepa "Golden Gourmet" shallot is an advancement from the traditional "Golden Yellow". The golden, brown skinned bulbs are larger and of better quality than their precursor, with a reduced incidence of bolting. The Golden Gourmet can be harvested as early as July, and can be stored throughout winter.

Planting Tip - If the ground is too wet, consider planting in raised beds.

Shallots are wonderfully easy to grow. Below we address some common queries:

  • Hardiness: Shallots are fully hardy, so are well-suited to the UK's climate.
  • Planting In Pots: You can grow your shallots in pots at least 8" (20cm) deep.
  • Position: Plant in full sun for the very best results.
  • Soil Types: Shallots can be planted in any type of soil.
  • Soil Preparation: dig in plenty of compost or well-rotted manure before planting.
  • Planting Distance: Plant shallot sets 8- 1 5cm (3 - 6") apart, and 3cm (1") deep so the tip is showing. Organise them in rows 30cm (12") apart.
  • Pest Control: Ensure good soil sterilization, rotational practices, and crop nutrition to reduce risk of pests.
  • Watering Requirements: Water regularly, especially during dry spells.
