Bacchus is the name that the Romans gave to the Greek god Dionysus. He was the god of fertility, wine and a patron of the arts. He is the only god to have a mortal parent, being the son of Zeus and Semele. Semele was killed by Zeus' lightning bolts while Dionysus was still in her womb. Dionysus was rescued and underwent a second birth from Zeus after developing in his thigh.
