Acorus calamus is a spreading, herbaceous perennial with tufts of aromatic, sword-shaped leaves striped longitudinally with creamy white. In summer it bears insignificant yellow-green flowers. Its attractively striped leaves are erect and rigid, but arch slightly at the tip.

This plant will thrive when planted in fertile, moist soil in full sun. Transfer container grown plants to a sunny position in spring.
