A unique trailing Abutilon bearing red, lantern-shaped blooms

With a fast growing habit, this trailing Abutilon will develop vibrant red flowers that display an unusual lantern-like shape. Towards the end of each bloom, yellow petals will emerge, resulting in a stark contrast against the maroon tones of the upper flower. Semi-evergreen, this climber will trail beautifully around a trellis or pergola, and will happily grow within your conservatory if planted in a container. As such, this plant will prove a versatile choice for every possible garden.

Caring and Maintenance

Requires support when freshly planted or young inorder to sustain a healthy growth and shape. Will develop a large spread which will require trimming. Major trimming is best left for winter during their dormant period but minor cuts can be made all year round.

Regular watering is required when first planted until the root system is established but then it will only require watering during very dry periods.

Can be planted all year round as long as the ground is not frozen or waterlogged..

Dig a hole approx 2.5 times the size of the rootball. The hole should be just deep enough to accomodate the rootball of the plant. If planting multiple plants, space them around 12 inches apart.

Place the plant into the hole, backfill with soil, firm lightly and prune back the plant to 6-10 inches above the ground.

Add some compost to the backfilled soil and surrounding area but avoid fertilising the plant for at least 3 months after planting. Once they are established you can fertilise with an all purpose fertiliser once every 1-2 months during spring and summer.
