Umbrella Plant Cyperus alternifolius - 1L Pot

The Umbrella Plant is an evergreen perennial which forms a clump of erect stems with green foliage and small yellow-green flowers. It has a striking exotic appearance whilst also resembling the spokes of an umbrella; hence the common name of 'Umbrella Plant'. It is a moisture loving plant that grows well in ponds and bog gardens. The Cyperus alternifolius has been awarded the Award of Garden Merit given by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), which helps gardeners make informed choices about plants.

Planting

Grow in wet soil or in water up to 30cm deep in a full sun or partial shade location. This plant is suitable for zones 1, 2 & 3 of a pond. In colder parts of the UK this plant will have to be overwintered; see the 'Caring and Maintenance' section for more information. Aquatic and marginal plants should be placed in pond plant baskets filled with aquatic soil (sold separately) and topped with a thin layer of gravel to help prevent the soil from washing away.

Caring and Maintenance

This plant is semi-hardy. It will happily survive outside in warmer parts of the UK all year around. However, in colder climates, it should be overwintered in a greenhouse. Water adequately during dry and hot periods.

RHS Award of Garden Merit

The Award of Garden Merit or AGM is an award made to garden plants by the British Royal Horticultural Society after a period of assessment by the appropriate committees of the Society. Awards are made annually after plant trials (which may last for one or more years, depending on the type of plant being trialled) at RHS Garden, Wisley and other RHS gardens, or after observation of plants in specialist collections. This is intended to judge the plants' performance for conditions in the UK.
