Water lilies prefer still water but can withstand a mild flow, such as a slow moving river. Be careful never to plant lilies too close to waterfalls and fountains, as water on the leaves can be harmful to the plant. Using mesh baskets for aquatic plants helps to control the growth of the plant as they spread rapidly through a number of rhizomes, creating new colonies. The baskets should be filled with aquatic soil (sold separately) and topped with a thin layer of gravel to help prevent the soil from washing away. Young water lilies should be started in shallow water and lowered gradually over several weeks for the best planting results.
This plant is suitable for zone 3 of a pond.
Caring and Maintenance:
Water lilies are very low maintenance plants. Remove dead leaves and faded flowers before they start to rot to maintain the condition of water and reduce the algae growth. They are self-seeding plants which can be also be propagated by rhizome division. It is easy to keep the growth of the plant under control, as cuttings of wandering stems can be made at almost any time of the year.
The water lily grows in the deeper part of your pond and is undeniably the most spectacular natural water feature imaginable. Its beautiful flowers refine the look of the pond whilst its floating leaves create a good shelter for fish and other aquatic life. They are also valuable plants for reducing algae growth.
Please Note: the plants will arrive ready to be placed directly in the pond.
