Sioux Water Lily Nymphaea Sioux - 3L Pot

The gorgeous Sioux Waterlily is a star shaped perennial originating from North America. It should be planted ideally in early spring in water more than 7.2°C, initially about 13cm deep, before it is lowered to its preferred depth of approx. 30-45cm as it starts to grow. The Sioux lily boasts a beautiful changeable palette of shades which alter daily. Hues of pink, peach, orange, and red grace its petals as its star shaped flowers stay open until late evening. Once planted, these hardy little lilies can withstand cold winters and emit a very pleasant fragrance, enjoying as much sunshine as you can provide them with.

Characteristics:

  • Foliage Colour: deep mottled green
  • Flower Colour: cream, peach, red, pink
  • Approx. Growth Height: 10cm above water surface
  • Max. spread: up to 50cm
  • Flowering Time: spring - winter
  • Uses: zone 5 of a pond, lake, ditch
  • Exposure: exposed
  • Habit: low-rafting, mat-forming, spreading
  • Hardiness: hardy
  • Rate of Growth: moderate
  • Suitable for small ponds

Requirements:

  • Light Requirements: full sun
  • Moisture: damp ground, shallow water, poorly drained

Planting:

  • Optimum Planting Depth: 30-45cm water

Water lilies prefer still water but can withstand a mild flow, such as a slow moving river, however they should not be planted too close to waterfalls and fountains. Planting aquatic plants and lilies is not difficult. Using mesh baskets for aquatic plants helps to control the growth of the plant as they spread rapidly through a number of rhizomes, creating new colonies. The baskets should be filled with aquatic soil (sold separately) and topped with a thin layer of gravel to help prevent the soil from washing away. Young water lilies should be started in shallow water and lowered gradually over several weeks for the best planting results.

This plant is suitable for zone 5 of a pond.

Caring and Maintenance:

Water lilies are very low maintenance plants. Remove dead leaves and faded flowers before they start to rot to maintain the condition of water and reduce the algae growth. They are self-seeding plants which can be also be propagated by rhizome division. It is easy to keep the growth of the plant under control, as cuttings of wandering stems can be made at almost any time of the year.

The water lily grows in the deeper part of your pond and is is undeniably the most spectacular natural water feature imaginable. Its beautiful flowers refine the look of the pond whilst its floating leaves create a good shelter for fish and other aquatic life. They are also valuable plants for reducing algae growth.

Please note: the plants will arrive ready to be placed directly in the pond.
