Water Mint Mentha Aquatica - 9cm Pot x 3 - Cut Back

Mentha Aquatica is a native British pond plant with mauve pink flowers and reddish green foliage. It is suitable for creating rafts of dangling roots, which is excellent for improving water filtration. The pleasant foliage of Mentha Aquatica can be used in the same way as other mints, and the attractive flowers are a favourite with flying pond insects, butterflies and bees. This vigorous marginal plant will quickly establish itself in shallow water or in moist ground, and gives off a refreshing minty aroma when brushed.

Aquatic and marginal plants should be placed in pond plant baskets filled with aquatic soil (sold separately) and topped with a thin layer of gravel to help prevent the soil from washing away. This plant is suitable for zone 2 of a pond.

Caring and Maintenance:

This is a very low maintenance yet vigorous pond side plant which spreads to form large clumps quickly; therefore, regular division may be required. Mentha Aquatica can be grown from seeds as well.

Marginal and pondside plants add interest, colour and structure to ponds, and offer the benefit of delightful fragrance. They are ideal for places near to patio or decking areas, where their sweet aroma can be appreciated. The plants can be positioned around the perimeter of a pond or on levelled shelves for original and attractive exposure. Marginal plants should be planted in boggy ground or shallow water for optimal growth results.

Help to conserve our native British flora by planting with our native plant range. These marginal pond plants grow naturally in the shallow water at the edge of the pond and are ideal for wildlife ponds or water features. As well as their attractive foliage and flowers, they provide a natural habitat for small pond creatures. The rafting varieties, such as the Water Forget-me-not, Brooklime, and Water Mint, spread out in small floating rafts, giving cover to baby fish and tadpoles. The tall emergent plants are essential for dragonflies and damsalfly nymphs to climb out of the water and transform into adults, and waterfowl like to nest among dense reeds and rushes. All plants contribute to the ecological haven of a natural pond, benefiting wildlife from tiny pond insects to mammals that like to visit for a drink.
