Prunus 'Kiku-shidare-zakura' (Cheal's Weeping Cherry)18L - 1/2 Standard Girth - 6/8cm

This beautiful plant is a stunning example of the way the seasons change deciduous trees. The leaves of this flowering plant are a gorgeous bronze when young, before turning red with the spring, and light green in summer. Come autumn, they fade to a mellow orange, creating a medley of colours. Combined with the blousey double flowers, which are an elegantly rich pink, this tree will add a burst of colour to your garden.

Cherry trees are famously hardy and will require little care and attention once established. The more compact, weeping habit of this tree makes it an ideal candidate if you have a smaller space to work with.

This particular tree is one from our mature ornamental tree range. If you want a substantial flowering cherry in your garden, but don't want to have to wait too long for it to grow, then this is a great option for you. Pictured in early spring, you can see buds already formed which will produce a good display of blossom this year and a display that will grow and grow over the years.

As a five year old tree, this cherry already has a good root base established. However, the tree will require some attention for the first year as it recovers from the transplant shock, so regular watering is advised. Strong growth will resume after this period, and you should see your tree edging towards an impressive stature over the next 3-5 years.

We deliver straight to you door, which is just as well because this huge tree wouldn't fit in most vans, let alone the average family car. And the best thing about this is, we only charge £5 for delivery, and you'll have your tree within 2-3 working days of ordering - no one else on the web offers a service like this for trees of this size!

Magical Spring Blossoms

The number one attraction for most people is the short lived but totally spell-binding display of blossoms which, for many, epitomises effervescence and wonder of spring. The Kiku-shidare-zakura is no exception. With the potential for more than one hundred petals per flower this tree puts on a show-stopping display every spring. It firstly produces dense clusters of pink buds that are wrapped around the pendulous branches which open up to reveal fantastic, cascading, baby pink, fully double blossoms that cover the entire tree and resembles a stick of candyfloss.

Fiery Autumn Colour

The spring display of cherry trees always steals the limelight. But this is not a tree for just one season. The elegantly shaped foliage fills your garden at the start of the year with beautiful, burnished bronze leaves that mature and become a glossy green in summer. This is followed by an awesome colour display in autumn where the leaves turn a wonderful red, orange and bronze rivalling the dramatic blossom display in spring.

Weeping Structure

For those of you who are in search of a traditional cherry tree shape I would reccomend the Prunus Kanzan. But for something slightly different and dramatic look no further. The Kiku-shidare-zakura has a wonferful and very pronounced weeping habit with gorgeous branches arching from the trunk. It looks amazing when the blossoms appear to cascade down the curved branches. More compact than other varieties of ornamental cherry tree it is perfect for a smaller gardens as it is relatively slow growing with an ultimate height of around 3 metres.

Planting and Care

Suited to almost all well-drained and moderately fertile soils with pH between 4.5 and 7.5 in a sheltered, full sun or partial shade location. Before planting your tree, clean up all wandering weeds and keep a clean ring around the tree base. Water well during the first year until well established. Autumn is the best season for planting trees, as the soil moisture and heat allow easier and faster root establishment and regeneration of damaged root systems. Keep a planting distance of at least 3 metres.

Water young trees regularly until roots are well established. Trim annually from mid to late summer. Apply some fertiliser in spring in order to promote healthy growth. Optionally, mulch in spring. Check tree ties regularly and loosen any if necessary to avoid rubbing of the stems.

History Of Cherry Blossom Trees

Cherry blossom trees are a popular ornamental tree which are known for their beauty and grown for their flowers rather than their fruit. However, even though the fruit is too small and tart for humans it is very popular with birds. Most of the varieties of this tree originated in Japan where they have held an important place in Japanese culture for hundreds of years. In fact the cherry blossom tree, which is known as sakura in Japan, is the country’s national flower. There is a custom called ‘hanami’ in Japan which means ‘flower viewing’ where people will gather to look at the flowering trees. Originally it was said to be a custom introduced by the Emperor and members of the Imperial Palace but has since become popular tradition in wider Japanese society. People will gather for a party or picnic under the trees when they are in full bloom.

A Mature Cherry Tree

The ideal choice if you want an instant impact. At Primrose, we pride ourselves on providing wonderful mature specimen trees grown at specialist nurseries. The quality and maturity of each tree is second to none and very hard to find elsewhere, especially online. This tree is no exception. A gorgeous, substantially sized plant already on the verge of full maturity. Grown and thoroughly tended to in ideal conditions and these beautiful trees have crowns of multiple, good sized branches already developed. This particular tree is already 5 years old and roughly 2 metres in height and we'll carefully deliver it straight to you door, for just £4.99. This is really handy because this tree wouldn't fit in most vans, let alone in the back of your car on the way back from the garden centre!

How to Plant a Potted Tree

A containerised tree can be planted at any point during the year unlike a bare root one. As long as the ground that it is planted in is not frozen or waterlogged the tree should be able to establish itself in any season. When planting your tree make sure that it has been watered and that it is in a suitable position where it can recieve plenty of sunshine and shelter from cold winds.
