5 Year Old Prunus kanzan 18l Half Standard

Kanzan, notorious for its bountiful bloom of pink flowers is one of the most popular blossoming cherry trees. It’s spring foliage shoots a fiery bronze colour giving this tree a truly spectacular spring display before turning green throughout the summer. Trained to a half standard this tree will also be allowed to show off its attractive silver trunk making it the complete ornamental tree.

The bold nature of the Japanese Flowering Cherry means it's not suitable for paved areas but the unique shape and colours make it a perfect avenue tree. Cherry trees are famously hardy and will require little care and attention once established. The stunning ornateness of the tree brings life to any area in where it's planted.

As a five year old tree, this cherry already has a good root base established. However, the tree will require some attention for the first year as it recovers from the transplant shock, so regular watering is advised. Strong growth will resume after this period, and you should see your tree edging towards an impressive stature over the next 3-5 years.

Primrose Guides

Magical Spring Blossoms

The number one attraction for most people is the short lived but totally spell-binding display of blossoms which, for many, epitomises effervescence and wonder of spring. The Kanzan is so popular because it has one of the finest and longest lived display of all cherry trees with a profusion of blooms for well over 3 weeks from the start of April. The upright structure allows the clouds of pink flowers to tower high into the air, so all your neighbours can be impressed.

Try taking a few cuttings to make a table display or adding to a lovely spring bouquet of daffodils and tulips.

Fiery Autumn Colour

The spring display of cherry trees always steals the limelight. But this is not a tree for just one season. The elegantly shaped foliage fills your garden with life in the first part of the year, emerging tinged with red borders. This reddy bronze colour stains the cherry leaf ever so slightly all year long but come September, it returns to set the foliage ablaze. This glorious exposition see yellows turn to glowing oranges as autumn progresses and ensures your garden has an Autumn display equally as dramatic as that of spring.

Architectural Upright Structure

For those of you in search of a weeping tree, I would suggest the Kiku-shidare. But, for the classic cherry tree shape, look no further. When you see a Kanzan in winter you can really appreciate the fine upright habit it exhibits. It has a less rounded bushy shape than other with its branches forcing their way up into the sky. This allows for even more flowering with little cross branching and the effect of the blossoms running up the side of the branching structure is quite something to behold.

That's not to say that you have to dedicate your entire garden to this tree; with a bit of careful pruning you can restrict the height of your tree to something more manageable.

Planting and Care

Suited to almost all well-drained and moderately fertile soils with pH between 4.5 and 7.5 in a sheltered, full sun or partial shade location. Before planting your tree, clean up all wandering weeds and keep a clean ring around the tree base. Water well during the first year until well established. Autumn is the best season for planting trees, as the soil moisture and heat allow easier and faster root establishment and regeneration of damaged root systems. Keep a planting distance of 6m.

Water young trees regularly until roots are well established. Trim annually from mid to late summer. Apply some fertilizer in spring in order to promote healthy growth and a good crop. Optionally, mulch in spring. Check tree ties regularly and loosen any if necessary to avoid rubbing of the stems.

History Of Cherry Blossom Trees

Cherry blossom trees are a popular ornamental tree which are known for their beauty and grown for their flowers rather than their fruit. However, even though the fruit is too small and tart for humans it is very popular with birds. Most of the varieties of this tree originated in Japan where they have held an important place in Japanese culture for hundreds of years. In fact the cherry blossom tree, which is known as sakura in Japan, is the country’s national flower. There is a custom called ‘hanami’ in Japan which means ‘flower viewing’ where people will gather to look at the flowering trees. Originally it was said to be a custom introduced by the Emperor and members of the Imperial Palace but has since become popular tradition in wider Japanese society. People will gather for a party or picnic under the trees when they are in full bloom.

A Mature Cherry Tree

The ideal choice if you want an instant impact. At Primrose, we pride ourselves on providing wonderful mature specimen trees grown at specialist nurseries. The quality and maturity of each tree is second to none and very hard to find elsewhere, especially online. This tree is no exception. A gorgeous, substantially sized plant already on the verge of full maturity. Grown and thoroughly tended to in ideal conditions and these beautiful trees have crowns of multiple, good sized branches already developed. This particular tree is already five years old and over 2 metres in height and we'll carefully deliver it straight to you door, for just £4.99. This is really handy because this tree wouldn't fit in most vans, let alone in the back of your car on the way back from the garden center!

How to Plant a Potted Tree

A containerised tree can be planted at any point during the year unlike a bare root one. As long as the ground that it is planted in is not frozen or waterlogged the tree should be able to establish itself in any season. When planting your tree make sure that it has been watered and that it is in a suitable position where it can recieve plenty of sunshine and shelter from cold winds.
