Can you build a pergola on your own?

Whilst building a traditional wooden pergola from scratch is very possible, it can also be a challenging project to complete – especially if you have not built one yourself before.

Luxury verandas are a great alternative to building a pergola.  A veranda offers the same design and practical benefits of a pergola, but is much easier to install, and often can be positioned in place without the help of a professional installer.

Contemporary verandas, which are available in a range of colours and styles, also have the added benefits of protecting your patio from harmful UV rays, as well as keeping their premium look for many years.  Find out more about verandas in our what is a veranda guide.

How much does it cost to build a pergola UK??

The average cost of building a pergola varies widely, with prices ranging between £500 for a small, simple pergola, to over £5,000 for more significant styles.

As well as factoring in the cost of the pergola materials, you should also consider the cost of hiring a professional installer to build the pergola for you.  Professional tradesmen can typically cost anywhere between £120 – £200 per day.  The type of fencing you wish to install, the amount of work required and your location will all affect the cost of installation.

Why not consider a veranda instead?  Luxury verandas are a cost-effective alternative to building a pergola.  With prices starting at around £700 for a practical patio cover, verandas offer additional choice, whatever style and size you need.  Plus, as luxury verandas are made from rustproof, maintenance free materials, they will last much longer than a traditional, wooden pergola.

Do I need permission to build a pergola UK?

You may need planning permission to build a pergola, if your house is in a conservation area.  Likewise, if you wish to build a large pergola, it is worth seeking advice from your local council in case you do require planning permission.

Adding a stylish veranda to your outside space is unlikely to require planning permission.  In fact, you may only need planning permission to install a veranda if it is located on the roof of your house, or is larger than 50% of the land that your house is sited on.  There are many styles and sizes of luxury verandas available to choose from that will not require planning permission.

What size pergola do I need?

The size of pergola you may need will all depend on the size of your patio or outside space.  Generally, a 4m x 3m Deluxe Veranda will comfortably cover a mid-size patio.  This is a great alternative to traditional pergolas as it simply takes two people to assemble in as little as two to three hours – much quicker than building a traditional pergola.
