Hyacinths are popular spring flowering bulbs and are wonderfully fragrant, available in a wide range of colours, from purple and white to pink and mauve.  As well as being easy to grow, they can be planted either outside or inside for a Christmas display.

Pink and Blue Hyacinths

To get the most from your hyacinths they need to be planted in moist but well-drained soil, and ideally in full sun between September and November. Plant hyacinth bulbs 10cm deep and 8cm apart. If you’re planting your Hyacinth bulbs in a planter or container, you can plant more shallow and closer together, just as long as they’re not touching.

Where to grow Hyacinths

Hyacinths are best planted towards the front of a border, along with other spring bulbs like Muscari, Daffodils and Tulips. Their relatively compact small size (up to 30cm tall) makes them a perfect choice for spring pot displays.

You can also grow Hyacinths indoors. Inside your home, grow hyacinths in a bright, airy spot, ideally with plenty of sunshine.

Planting hyacinths in pots

It’s best to wear gloves when planting hyacinth bulbs, as they can irritate the skin.

Growing outdoor hyacinths:

  1. The best time to plant Hyacinths is in the autumn.
  2. There is only a little soil preparation to do with the soil, simply remove the weeds and turn over to reduce compaction if necessary and add in organic matter such as well-rotted animal manure or compost.
  3. Plant the bulbs at a depth of around 10cm and 8cm apart.
  4. Cover with soil and gently firm around them. Don’t forget to water them especially if the soil is dry.

Growing hyacinths in pots:

  1. For the best results from your Hyacinths use fresh peat-free, multi-purpose compost.
  2. If you are looking to leave them in your containers for several years, it’s best to plant them a little deeper and further apart as if you were going to plant them in the ground.
  3. Add an annual dressing of slow-release fertiliser to help keep the display looking its best.
