Plant description

The deeply lobed green leaves create a somewhat lacy effect, and each is irregularly threaded or blotched with burgundy. Then, in spring and early summer, burgundy-flushed stems bearing cone-shaped clusters of tight, pink buds are jettisoned, before opening to masses of tiny white, star-shaped flowers. It makes a sublime ground-cover for partially shaded position, and looks best when planted in naturalised drifts and allowed to meander.

Care guide

Removing the faded blooms regularly will prolong flowering and encourage more to come. Cut back and compost the spent flower stems in autumn and apply a dry mulch around the crown of the plant to protect against frost damage.
